I used to love mysteries a lot more a few years back. Now I find that I do not enjoy them as much as the setting up of the mystery seems to take most of the book. Maybe I should try reading some faster-paced mysteries.
It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.

Yes, I have always loved mysteries, and also enjoyed Nancy Drew and Enid Blyton detective stories. I started to enjoy Agatha Christie at a young age too.
This post was brought to you by the word "specifically".

Detective stories are not my favorite genre, but if the plot sounds interesting, I'm willing to give it a try. In fact, I would like to read 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins. It is supposed to be one of the first detective stories ever written.

Thanks for the trivia about The Moonstone. I love detective stories. Reading the first detective story ever would be a thrill. I wonder what detecting methods were used then.

Then you should definitely read The Moonstone. It was published in 1868. But the very first detective story is 'The Notting Hill' Mystery by Charles Felix. It was written six years before The Moonstone. I haven't read any of them, I just know what they are about because I had to do some research about them. But if you read them, let me know what you think about them.

For somebody who isn't a fan of detective stories, you sure know a lot about the genre's early days. Thanks for sharing. Now I'm on a mission!

I love detective stories. Most favourite being Sherlock Holmes. But definitely there are others too such as Famous 5, Nancy Drew which are also my favourites.

Vivian Paschal wrote:Of course, since I was a kid! I grew up seeing my mum's detective novels all around the house. The first I read was 'Miss Malory Investigates' and it was the writer's first book but it was very enjoyable. Then I moved to Agatha Christie. Next thing I knew, I was drawn into the world of James Patterson and a host of others. It's always amazing the way they task the brain.
This is great. I also love to read the books of James Patterson but at times, I get tired of reading them because of the suspense embedded in their pages.

I remember reading The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. After that, how can you not like detective stories?

I slip in and out of the mystery genre at times. When I was younger I read Nancy Drew books and the mystery specials of the Babysitter's Club books. Now, the only mysteries I read is when I am on a kick of reading the cozy mysteries.

I love detective stories because I always learn something new whenever a detective tries to deduce the clues.
