An occasional song or poem I can go along with but if there are a lot of them I rapidly start to skip them.

It is OK to use the lyrics of songs in novels. However, after a while I just skipped over them as they were getting to be too much.

Not really. I think that the use of songs in a novel sometimes make the novel frustrating, and even in this book, I mostly skipped it.

I once read a book by Mois Bennaroch that had too many songs. I did not like the interruption in the flow of the story. I think the number of songs should be limited to just a few.

I love the inclusion of songs and poetry in any book. They break the monotony of narration.
“Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real.”

Use of songs in a novel, makes it more realistic and brings the reader closer to ideas of the author.

I believe The fault in our stars by John Green had a few poems. Whether it was that book or I'm just confused, I really liked the poems.

I have read one or two where the author inserted songs to communicate certain emotions but to me it just seemed forced and cheesy... I prefer the written word and musical expression to stay mostly separate I guess.

This was the first novel I have read that lyrics were included throughout the book. I personally love to read books of quotes and poetry books so I enjoyed the lyrics in this book. I love to go back and look up the words to a song that I have heard and be able to read them word for word. It's like a form of poetry to me plus it sometimes help to understand exactly what the song is about when u read through the lyrics without the actual song playing.

I think the use of songs works really well in some fantasy adventure novels.

I think adding in songs/poems etc. can be a really good idea if it adds to the story in some way. A relevant outside quotation/reference - especially if it is well-known - can really help you to identify.
"Every reader is, while he is reading, the reader of his own self. The writer's work is merely a kind of optical instrument which he offers to the reader to enable him to discern what...he would perhaps never have perceived in himself."
Proust

The Lord of the Rings novels have several songs and poems. They are great and are quite interesting to read.
