Sometimes songs help to create a certain atmosphere for what is happening in the story. So I think songs can play an integral part in setting the mood in a book.

I actually have read novels with songs in them, but not this quantity. I think it's refreshing and fascinating.

The first time I really had to focus on the poems was in the Malazan books of the fallen series. And let me tell you they are good poems. They also provide extra depth in the world because they are written by names you recognize in the lore of the world. I have to confess though that I needed the commentary of a reread to decipher them. I also listen to most of my books so if there are songs or poems in my book I would like the narrator or writer to orate or sing them maybe even with music.

I read some short stories earlier with novels but often the poems were boring or not coherent with the story, unlike the lyrics here, they were short and matched wit the story well

I liked the verses they included and they were always really relevant to the chapter, but the execution was off for me. It felt forced everytime they included the lyrics into the story. Would have been better to just have them at the beginning like an epitaph, imo

There were other books who used snippets of poems or song lyrics. How it was used in this book felt a little like overkill to me, and I kept wishing that the authors found a more organic way to integrate the lyrics.

When reading the book, I was not familiar with the songs and neither have I gone out of my way to find and listen. It would have been helpful if the authors indicated they had permission to use the lyrics in the book. People do covers of popular songs, yet we have no luxury of knowing whether or not the singers have met all legal obligations beforehand.

I have done books that the inclusion of songs/poems is done well, and I have read books where I didn't care for it. In this case, I felt like the inclusion of the Adele songs was too much and too forced. Still, it is a creative idea, and I give credit for the authors trying it out. There is something to be said for the fact that music can be a common threat between otherwise very different characters.

That was the first time I read a book that contains song lyrics, if I’m being completely honest they were kind of unnecessary and I skipped over them.
