I believe that religion was mentioned as a necessary part of the three stories, but figured most prominently in the Yaser-Mariam story.

The religious aspect felt more forced then anything, or used as a source of conflict.

It was very apparent to me as well. I lived in the UAE for some time so it was not a foreign concept. But, it was very apparent in my opinion and brought back many memories of my life in the past. Good memories by the way. :)

I thought the religious angle was very strong in the Yasir and Mariam part of the story, and I enjoyed that a lot

I don't think religion was forced a lot in the book. It was just a small aspect of the book.
