Yes, when I was still teaching literature it was one of the things I stressed to my students. Books give us the ability to travel to places we've never been. To see things we may never see. To see the world through other people's eyes.

I love reading as an escape, so I enjoy reading about places I've never been. I love it when an author can paint a picture with words so thoroughly that I'm transported there in my mind and can also feel myself walking through those spaces. I've read many books that have done that for me, but the first one that pops to mind is The Covenant by Hilda Stahl (probably because I moved it while organizing my bookshelf earlier).

I read about Italy all time. I have never been.
But through books I have learned a lot about the culture and have selected it for my honeymoon destination. Because of books that describe Italy or were written by Italian authors (Dante) I have even started learning Italian and am contemplating moving there.

I love it- it makes me feel like I am actually traveling to that place (and it's cheaper than paying for a ticket!). Lately I've been reading quite a few books set in South Africa.

One great thing about books is that you can be anywhere, even outer space. Trust me.

I definitely prefer to read books about places I've never been. It feels like every time I do I'm on a new adventure traveling to a new place I will probably never see.

Yes--I just finished one about Alaska yesterday. Never been there. I'm not sure there was much particularly "Alaska" about it--more just a cabin in the wilderness. But I don't live in a cabin in the wilderness, either. Really enjoyed it! Actually wrote a review about it for this site.

My favorite authors tend to be British or Australian so the British ones are harder to get into because of the lack of knowing where things are/what culture specific thing they’re talking about. Australia is even worse because of their different hemisphere weather and that throwing me off!

Of course I love to!! Books cost lesser than travel expenses and with no hassle and stress-free we always encounter when we go somewhere else.

Yes, I love to read books about places I never been through and it gives me a glimpse of what can I expect with those places because I'm definitely sure authors researched carefully about their settings. And it would let me plan to go to those places someday.

Amagine wrote:In My Trip to Adele, one of the things that I liked about the book was the different settings the story took place in and the description of them. The authors vividly described the scenery of Rome, Jordan and even Las Vegas. All of these are places I've never been before.

So what about you? Do you like reading books that describe places you've never seen or been before? Why? What kind of feeling does it evoke in you?

Bonus Question: What's your favorite book that depicts a place foreign to you?
This is one of the many things I love about reading. You are able to explore foreign places and times, experience many vocations, forms of entertainment, etc. even though it may be vicariously. I for one would rather read about the Amazon jungle than not to experience it at all. Those of us with active imaginations build the images in our minds making reading a visceral process. My favorite book...that is a hard choice...Seattle Washington and the Pacific NW as depicted in many stories makes it one of the places to which I will travel as soon as the opportunity arises.
