Such a beautiful story, thank you for posting the text of this, I have become emotional once again remembering some of the finer details of this story. This was heartbreaking to read as a child, for having grown up with Disney and many childrens' shows, there is always the belief of a typical happy ending, but that is not always possible. This is something that I came to understand as I grew up, but I appreciate this story all the more.

Oscar Wilde was a master storyteller as well as a master wit, so everyone should read his short stories and any of his works, because their lives will be so enriched! :)

It is such a bitter sweet story. It touches my heart. The lessons are priceless and selfless. Great story

Wow, I hadn't seen this story before, so glad it was posted here. While it may not be his best writing piece I think it still has a moral to it! Not everyone has to like it though....

I love this story! I still have a small anthology of stories by Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde, and others. This story is included along with a beautiful illustration. I could read it over and over.

This short story, along with The Nightingale's Rose, has made me who I am. Before reading this story, I used to think it was the noblest thing to sacrifice oneself for the sake of others. After reading Wilde's tale, I realized that there's much more involved in bringing about real change than just giving.
