There was this one time I looked at our new neighbor keenly and thought she looked like some one who be overly concerned about others so I just started crying and what do you know.....we are best friends till now. Be observant, approachable and tactful.

If I was welcoming someone to my home, I would let them know that (with the exception of my personal room) what's mine is theirs. They can feel free to raid my fridge, use my bathroom, use my electronics and anything else. My personal room is my personal room but everything else is completely open to them.

We even go so far as to feed animals to make friends with them.
I'm with Gravy. I'm born and raised in the south and the best thing to make some welcome is to feed them and give them a big glass of Sweet Ice Tea. Also, while eating you can start up a friendly conversation and hopefully they'll stay for dessert.

I have found there are way too many keyboard-hero's on the net, this site is a welcome exception, so thank you to the membership for making it so.

Welcome to the site! I hope you feel a welcoming atmosphere here! :D

Hmm.. :eusa-think:

Maybe the next question for everyone should be how do welcome someone into a group?

I just went to a friend's house for the first time yesterday. By the end of my time there I had had three cups of tea/coffee/juice, dinner, and dessert! More importantly, though, was the way my friend talked to me. I was actually reluctant to stay for dinner, but she was so excited about having me there and wanted me to stay even longer so we could talk more! Being excited about the other person's presence really shows, and makes the guest feel so much more welcome! If you are reluctant to open up your house to someone and want them gone quickly, I think that will show as well...

I wish I could say I do more to be hospitable to humans. With animals though, I've adopted more than my fair share of strays. Letting them feel comfortable walking through the front door is always the first step.

That is wonderful that you feel comfortable and welcomed here. This is definitely an environment that has become a joy to visit daily for me. I hope it stays the same way for you! :)

Depending on the situation, I would say approaching the person and simply introducing yourself. I would also follow it up with either a "how do you know so-and-so (host of the party)" or ask about their job or interests. Definitely trying to connect to that person.

I don't know if I would overwhelm this person with a whole group discussion about him/herself, but I could perhaps pull in one or two other friends to engage with the new person.

Literally speaking, I open my home to different kinds of domesticated animals. I prefer to talk with them as I groom them than watching the television.

I learned from some readings that Indians from the city of Chennai are warm people even to strangers. They accommodate strangers, especially at an unsafe hour. I wish to reach that place, someday.

Like someone had already mentioned: treat someone the way you want to be treated. I totally agree with that.
