Re: Good vs. Evil

Post by Chitopogi »

The notion about good and evil has been around since time immemorial. Conflicts between good and evil can give us the heebie geebies but since, in the end, good prevails over evil; we can rest assured that evil can not overwhelm us. Imagine if evil were to prevail, the readers will be left in limbo and maybe some will become paranoid. Just thinking...

You're right. Good vs. Evil is something that has existed for eons and will continue exist thousands of years later. I would actually like to read a book where evil or good doesn't necessarily win over the other. That's kind of how the world is sometimes.

I know there were some on here that were wanting to have a story where evil wins. If that is you, I urge you to look at the movie from 1999 called Arlington Road. I hated that movie for that very reason.

I don't like movies that end that way either. Like Jeepers Creepers. Hated the ending.

I enjoy these types of books but like you I find they can be a bit predictable. I really like when an author throws in a twist or leaves the ending a bit of a cliff hanger and leaves you wondering what if?...

A cliff-hanger isn't really a problem for me, it's just when evil ultimately triumphs over good that bothers me. It truly feels wrong somehow.

I'm not too big of a fan of cliff hangers but I agree that I love when there is a twist and they ending isn't predictable.

A good twist is almost expected nowadays. Sometimes there are so many twists that it is way too confusing!

Hmm..that's true. Sometimes authors try a little too hard to make their plot exciting and interesting.

That has happened to me more times than I care to admit. :roll2:

I prefer the Good vs. Evil when both sides can be understood. When both are looking different sides of the same coin. The characters come across as more believable and I am more like to empathize.
The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon

I agree with this. I love characters that are so well developed that there's no obvious or clear divide on who is good vs who is evil - in the beginning at least - and it's a matter of seeing things from different points of view. I like being able to relate to characters and, as you said, empathize with them and come to some level of understanding about why things are happening and why they do the things they do.
