Honestly I think integrity, morals and guilt will be the main emotions. But actually it's all of them. It's just a difference in being good or being bad.

I think our mortality and emotions make us human. The fact we feel things on such emotional levels we cry or rage when we feel them makes us human. Then the fact we know we will die make our emotions that much stronger.

I think we rose above animals and became human when we first learned to make fire and use it to our advantage. To make tools, to think in abstract terms, and to become smarter and smarter.

What makes us human beings is the intellect that we posses besides being mortal. We are different from other species of God's creation because we can do things differently and create new things.

I kind of don't agree. Every living being has emotions, but what makes us human is a belief system that is unique to each one of us. Something like that is developed by each one of us over time, and plays a role in the decisions we make. That's what makes us human.

It's the fact that we can empathize, thus enabling us to love and care for those around us. The true measure of humanity is the ability to view the world through another person's eyes.

True.

Well, God says, "let us make man in our own image." Every other living thing was spoken into being, but man was formed from the dust of the earth and given dominion over all other creatures.

To me what make us a human is the way we perceived and reacts to our social environment

I think what makes us human is our ability to relate to other people and to recognize that we are not alone. I think we lose our humanity when we feel nothing for the people around us. Some of the comments have been about our intelligence, and that having that intelligence is what makes us human. I think that is only a small part of it. We must be intelligent on a deeper level than just common sense.
Give me the courage to get through this week...or at least a big bar of chocolate :D

At other times, the way he sees the world and the situations he encounters in it, seem to change dramatically in a short period of time without a conscious effort on his part.

What do you think the author is trying to say about what makes us human? Are the changes Steven goes through meant to aid him, or make a point to the reader? What do you think makes us human?
Personally, I believe that our capacity to think does. Even immortals are humans. For example- all religions believe in paradise. In paradise, humans will be there but they shall be immortal.
Maybe it isn’t just our capacity to think, but our capacity to communicate those thoughts that truly makes us human. Arguably, all species have communication, but its the sophistication with which humans communicate that sets us apart. Instead of communicating simply out of necessity, we feel a desire to voice thoughts that would otherwise remain silent and dormant in our heads. Humans are the only animals with a written language, the only animals that use language as a tool and a device with which to spread thoughts and philosophies and feelings.
