Sometimes changes need to be experienced by the individual rather than being told or explained. These are my feelings about that.

Conner is complex. He should be in a novel of this size. At the beginning of the novel, there were things that had to be told or explained but that changed within the first few chapters. Then, the experiences of Conner which slowly (but not inevitably) led him to alternately accept and reject expectations of him made for a good story without an external explanatory narrator.

My knee jerk reaction was frustration - just accept who you are already! However I reminded myself throughout reading this book that he is a 17 year old boy who just lost his mother and is now meeting his aloof and mysterious father for the first time. Would it truly have been believable for him to embrace what he is and what he is meant to do at first pass?
