Timewise bridges the gap between the Arts and Science oriented individual, in its language use, characterizations, and settings. The narrative depicts the marrying of these worlds in the diametrical pastimes of Ron Larson's poker games in casinos, nature walks in the woods of Massachusetts, and Mathematics at places of study. The narrative is full of surprises from the women he becomes attracted to who are often highly intelligent and sexually adventurous.
Robert Leet’s Timewise is a circular sci-fi narrative that begins with a compelling first-person, teenage narrator, Ron. He is a highly intelligent orphan hooked on the game of chess. He attains good grades for entry into university but lacks the finances and the will power to pursue this dream. Ron transfers his passion for chess playing into poker to supplement his meager earnings as a sales representative. Unable to permit Ron’s potential to be unrealized, Regina Russo, throws him a lifesaver in an offer to fund his education if he would score A’s in his courses. Ron faced with the prospect of dwindling fortunes at poker and heartbroken by the sudden loss of his outdoor exploration companion, Cheryl, accepts his Physics teacher's offer.
As an art-oriented individual, I disliked the heavily theoretical, didactic, and lengthy discussions that sometimes occurred between Ron Larson and Regina Russo. It is possible that the discussion of quantum physics, photons of light and wave particles may be a turnoff to some readers. Such discussions are definitely out of my comfort zone. Ron and Regina’s frequent discourses about Planck units and Bayesian statistics occur throughout the narrative as they maintained one of the longest relationships.
However, the easy-going manner in which the discussions weave themselves into the narrative keeps the anti-physics individuals still hinged to the narrative knowing they have company in Ron who often confesses his annoyance of Russo’s favorite preoccupations. Ron’s sharing of his days in the dump and his halcyon moments in Massachusetts and New York makes for quite a riveting narrative.
Timewise proves quite a page-turner novel in its delicate balance between action and description. The narrative is thought-provoking with strong, credible, and lovable female and male characters. Thus, I awarded Leet’s enthralling narrative 4 out of 4 stars. Timewise reads as a well-edited text as I detected only two errors which in no way detracted from the comprehension of the narrative. Readers of sci-fi adventure and fantasy genre will enjoy Timewise.
