A book review on health tips, myths and tricks, a physician’s advice. Health information that liberates us from “Snake oil” by Morton E. Tavel, M.D.

What I liked least about the book is the authors step by step of the various health tips, myths and tricks used by promoters and fraudsters to defraud consumers. I personally loved this piece because my doubts are cleared and it is indeed a physician’s advice and a health information that liberates any false beliefs like snake oil. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is explicit and a guide to health.

Dr. Morton E Tavel explains that weight gain or loss is gotten as a result of our diet. The Body Mass Index is one way to check if anyone is normal, overweight or obese. Aside various methods of curbing excess weight, dieting remains the most effective. Secondly, regular and good breakfast which comprises of almost all classes of foods is important, while eliminating trans-fat foods which is considered the most type of fat to be consumed, coffee consumption and beverages and chocolates helps to boost brain function, reduce cholesterol, and fatty oils .Most importantly, inclusion of fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds and Omega 3 consumption from fishes and oysters is key especially to childbearing mothers.

Sodium chloride is the major cause of hypertension. It is a serious threat and the best way to avoid it, is by reducing excessive intake, avoid salt shakers and do regular checks. Consumption of potassium in diets is another way to curb the adverse effects of sodium. Other ways include maintaining a healthy weight, be physically active, follow a healthy eating plan, and avoid excessive alcohol. Red meat shortens life span and is not healthy for the brain and heart. The arteriosclerotic process resulting from consumption can lead to heart attacks, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancers. Since we cannot ascertain the relationship between red wine and cardiovascular disease, moderate intake of red wine is advised with additional consumption of dark chocolates, peanuts, cranberries and red grapes. Food rich in arsenic compounds should be taken in moderation especially in children below 5 years of age and dietary supplements should be taken on prescription and regardless on the eventual resolution on sweeteners, mixture with unadulterated water is best.

The danger of eating junk food is important. They are branded to look natural, being disguised by charity and manufacturing addiction. In other to reduce the consumption of these, we must seek true satisfaction, read labels wisely, be careful of excess salt and fat, eat quality foods as well as fruits and vegetables. Smoking and E-smoking are dangerous to health as it is dangerous to the lungs and cancer and kidney failure in some cases. Regular exercise is essential for the growth and function of the body as well as adequate sleep. Over the past few decades, numerous myths have risen about cancers, cell phones, and spread of HIV infection, genetically modified foods and plants, some of these have created fears and doubts that never die. It is therefore useful to debunk such misinformation as it can be misleading

In examining tricks, Dr. Tavel advised everyone to be properly guided stressing that these cures are false by forcing a hypothesis based on biologic plausibility. The era of new health frauds on snake oil anatomy is a typical scam and an old trick and clichés used by promoters to gain trust and take money from consumers. Other times, use of professional athletics as shills to promote snake oil to tip off consumers but these products are not intended to diagnose, cure, or prevent any disease or detoxifying the body of unwanted substances while lacking scientific proof of benefit.
