Four Funny Potatoes! by Len Foley is colorful book aimed for small kids who love rhyming and funny wordplay. It can be read out loud by parent or be something that catches the imagination of the child who is browsing it as a picture book.

The idea for the book is quite simple. In the kitchen there are food items that come to life when no one is watching. A bit like Toy Story with vegetables and snacks. Because bossy String Bean Director character is conducting all important Potato Show, there must be four potatoes who sing a song in it and make it happen. There is only one small yellow problem with that and that problem is Benny, who is forced to be part of the show although he isn't a potato, but just an ordinary (and tasty looking) banana. And he is frustrated because no one takes any notice of this fact.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is lovingly put together with illustrations that are whimsical and fun. Visuals incorporate real pictures of vegetables and food items for kids to recognize with faultlessly drawn on faces and limbs that convey the characters perfectly. Pictures are very meticulously created and positive, so it seems like the reader is looking at a scene that is taking place on a gorgeous sunny summer day.

There isn’t much text in the book, but it is well edited and easy to read. The rhymes are comfortable to follow and logical, so kids can almost guess them when reading or listening and this predictability is something that in my experience makes small kids enjoy it even more. Because they will remember it more easily and can “read” the book out loud later independently as well.

I am giving out a little friendly warning here, that there is a little twist ending to the story that a small child will either love and think it is hilarious or they might be a bit horrified by it. It just depends on the sensibility of the child. Let’s just say that bananas will sometimes go to banana heaven.
