Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! by Len Foley is an extremely enjoyable book written for children. It features a little boy named Sigfried trying to discern the possible source of a disgusting smell in his room. What revolting objects does he discover during his exhaustive search?
Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! has all the essential components of a children’s book. The short length is suitable for the limited attention span of the children. They will be able to read the entire book without losing interest. The brief and rhyming sentences will invariably capture their attention. Additionally, the entire book is written in a colorful and attractive font. The author ensures an easy reading by the target audience in every aspect.
The accompanying illustrations perfectly complement the narration. Created by the author himself, they are bright and colorful. Sigfried’s expression in the pictures was amusing. Especially, the final picture made me laugh hysterically. To be honest, I could not imagine a funnier end than this.
In my opinion, there is a lot to learn from this book. One unique aspect is the use of real pictures of pizza slices, peanut butter, and bananas. Foley dutifully marks the food objects using colorful arrows that will help the children to identify them.
The author incorporates pictures of socks with different color and patterns. He also mentions the names of the different shades in writing. This will assist the children to instantly recognize various colors. Additionally, the young readers can increase their vocabulary by learning unfamiliar words like “reek” and “whiff."
Research shows children to be more sensitive towards certain smells than adults. Foley does a great job using this heightened sense of smell to inculcate the children with the habit of cleanliness. Teaching them the importance of healthy habits from an impressionable age will certainly make the lesson more effective. They can learn why it is inadvisable to stick a piece of food or gum in a book in an entertaining manner.
Keeping in mind all the above-mentioned points, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I deducted one star because the topic seemed a little too repulsive for young readers. Devoid of grammatical and typing errors, this book will undoubtedly appeal to children aged 3-7 years. The adults will equally enjoy reading about Sigfried’s antics.
