This book by William H. Coles follows the lives of two very different sisters throughout their adult years.

The cast of “The Spirit of Want” are intertwined through long past and sometimes hidden histories and recent events that shape their hopes, disappointments, personal relationships, professional lives & choices that lead all the main characters towards happiness or their ultimate downfall.

There is a often a sense of justice being done and other story lines where justice would seem to be an imaginary concept. Luke and Lucy’s daughter, Jennifer, is one such innocent who will pulls on the heart strings of readers.

Luke and the younger sister Elizabeth display the best of human qualities and find it difficult to accept the obvious selfishness and egotism of others.

Lucy is the daughter of A.J. and Agnes and the elder sister of Elizabeth. She becomes Luke’s second wife and it is clear from the outset that Lucy cares primarily for herself and she is a woman driven by personal ambition and satisfaction.

And it is Lucy who is ultimately responsible for the way this story unfolds. Her personality leads her to make choices that lead to both predictable and unpredictable outcomes for herself and others she interacts with, regardless of her absence or presence.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Yes, there are some typos and although I found this book interesting, I did not find it one that deserves a higher rating.
