Sigfried’s Smelly Socks by Len Foley is a hilarious children’s book that though directed mainly at 3-year-olds, even adults would enjoy reading.
Something sure stank about this book (according to the book's description) and I made up my mind to find out what that was. In the end, I couldn’t name exactly what produced such foul smell, because there wasn’t an ‘exactly what.’ Everything stank!
In Sigfried’s Smelly Socks, the reader navigates the book trying to decide what smelled the most; there were options. There was a page with dog pee on it. Sigfried’s brother, Sherman, wiped his nose on another, and his sister, Piper, wiped her behind with yet another page. I thought all that was bad until I got to the page where Sigfried began to describe his socks and the various ways they reeked. No word can amply describe them, so I'll simply say it was a really smelly experience.
Len Foley truly did a beautiful job writing this book. His chosen diction was simple enough; just perfect for his target audience. The book also had some rhymes to make it more fun, as well as illustrations. Each illustration translated exactly what the author was saying. Not to mention the fact that they were really funny to look at.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sigfried’s Smelly Socks. It had no typos or punctuation errors. I did, however, notice that the pages weren’t numbered. This book would make a good material in teaching children how to read. I wholeheartedly rate it as 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to adults who have an interest in the children’s books genre. It would also make a good past-time story for children, just as long as they are told the moral is for them to keep their socks clean.
