Four Funny Potatoes! by Len Foley is a cute children's book with a lovely lesson thrown in. It consists of just under 30 pages of rhyming fun appropriate for children from ages three to seven. However, the younger ones in that range will probably need an adult to read the book to them.

Arnie, Jimmy, Marvin and Benny, along with some other produce, are putting on a show. Each has their own talents, but when it comes time to sing their song, Benny insists that he isn't a potato. The director wants Benny to say the lines as written. Benny proceeds to tell the director exactly what he is and why. What is Benny? Does the show go on?

One of the most important aspects of a children's book is the illustrations. After all, many of the children in this age range will not be able to read this on their own. The pictures help to keep a child involved and help them understand the meaning of some of the more difficult words. The illustrations in this children's story are vivid and bright. They combine real pictures of vegetables and fruits with drawings by the author. I found this to be unique and to add another level to the book. I can't see any child not enjoying these illustrations.

I, also, enjoyed the rhyming nature of the story. I didn't feel that the rhyme scheme was stretched too much to fit unusual or non-rhyming words. In addition, the font was colorful and easy to read.

While the story is mostly fun, there is a lesson to be learned. We should all work together - and get along - regardless of our differences. I did, though, have a small issue with the ending. As with Len Foley's other children's book, there is a plot twist at the end of the book. Without including spoilers, I will simply say that some children may get upset at what happens to some of the characters. Having said that, the author has one final page that, I believe, will set the child to rights again. I would recommend a parent screening this one before letting their children read it to be on the safe side.

All in all, even as an adult I enjoyed Four Funny Potatoes! by Len Foley. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars for the great illustrations, good rhyme scheme and fun moral lesson. I recommend it to any child ages three to seven as well as their parents, guardians or teachers. Those that are more sensitive should either avoid the book or make sure a parent is present during reading.

Having been a kid once, I can see how this might be a bit much for some children. You are right about his illustrations. Thanks!
