Conor Archer is a 17-year-old musician and a member of the Celtic band in Chicago. He is the protagonist and his life is about to take a whole new direction. Roan: The Tales of Conor Archer Volume 1 is an action-packed sci-fi/fantasy novel that talks about the adventures of Conor. It is written by E. R Barr.
One evening as Conor leaves the pub after performing, a strange man appears and bites his hand. Conor does not know the impact of the bite until he meets a beautiful woman on the way. The woman helps him bandage his wound and tells him that he has a few days left to live. Conor is surprised and his anguish becomes more deep when gets home and finds his mother living her last moments. His mother is at her last stage of cancer. Before she passes on, she instructs Conor to find his aunt who lives in Tinker's Grove. Conor had never heard of such a place and his mother had never mentioned anything about an aunt or a place like that before. Everything is strange to Conor and he sets out on a mysterious journey to find cure to his illness and, probably the answers to his origin and his purpose in saving the people.
The book has a lot of mystery which makes it a page turner. As the story unfolds, we find out that Tinker's Grove is a mysterious place with strange people. We have gods, goddesses and normal people with superpowers. Conor finds a group of people who resemble him. Their feet and hands are webbed and here, they are identified as the 'dark ones'. The dark ones have mysterious powers and when Conor arrives, he seems to have more power and unique skills. His healing process is the strangest of all and the people here see him as special. We also have mythically evil characters who cause trouble and misfortunes.
Conor is a realistic character and he has fears anyone would have given the same situation. He is scared of taking up his new duties and accepting that he has superpowers.
I loved the plot development of the book. The fiction is creatively written and detailed. The characters are well developed and interesting. Each character plays their role effectively, be it being a good character or an evil one. The events are vividly described and the prose is flawlessly written. The author did a thorough research before writing this book as the historical facts are correctly potrayed. I also loved the way the characters appeared and dissappeared after completing their tasks. The biker man's role of biting Conor and disappearing is an example of character development. The author made it easy to follow up on the events and characters.
One drawback is that the book is lengthy and there was irrelevant information which made it to drag.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I loved the author's writing style and imagination. I recommend it to young adults who love fiction novels full of mystery and mythical beings. Looking forward to reading the next book.
