The Mystery of Flight 2222 is the first book by Thomas Neviaser. He has retired as an orthopedic surgeon after a 36 years long career. Previously, he has authored on topics in orthopedics but this is his first work of non-fiction.
The story revolves around nine passengers of US Air’s flight 2222 to Argentina. Two passengers, Frank and Helen, are seated together in the plane. Frank is going on a business trip to Argentina while Helen is going to attend the funeral of her ex-mother-in-law. To pass the time on this long flight, Frank suggests a game to Helen in which they have a guess about random passengers on the flight; their names, occupations, ages etc. They guess about seven passengers, including a couple and an old lady, before giving up on the game. The plane is flying through clear skies when suddenly the left engine catches fire and the plane crashes into the ocean. To the surprise of Frank and Helen, there are only seven other survivors: short-listed passengers from their game. From here starts their adventure of survival which includes escaping a shark attack, fighting pirates and cannibalism. Some survivors, from the group of nine, make it through but then comes the biggest suspense; the game is restarted.
The book was an amazing read. The author has put in good effort to define the characters and scenarios. He has included all the relevant details required for each scene which creates an accurate image in your head. The story is very grabbing too. Mostly in a thriller novel, as you read on, it becomes easier to guess what happens next but this was not the case in this story. A reader gets glued to the book and keeps on turning the pages to see what happens next. The characters are easy to connect to and their conversations are simple and believable. Best parts of the book were the adventures that kept coming in a good flow. The story did not break at any point to focus on some irrelevant part or flashbacks of the characters. This was left for the epilogue.
In the epilogue, the author discusses the history of each of the nine passengers and how they ended up on the flight. The author here gets a bit off track. All the preceding chapters have been good but the author couldn’t maintain the same standard at the end. The stories written were not that amazing as the book has been. These stories make a reader wonder whether the character really deserved to be in these scenarios.
I will still rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn’t find much editing errors in the book, maybe because the story just lets the mind ignore such errors. The book has some intense violent and gory scenes; therefore, it may be inappropriate for some audience. Those who like adventure and thriller genre will certainly enjoy the book.
