Children are vanishing without a trace and nobody knows why. Hundreds of children are just gone; they seem to have simply vanished into thin air. Parents might be with their children in the yard one moment and wake up in their house the next, never to see their children again. They can’t remember what happened. All they know is that their children are gone. And once the children disappear, none ever return. At least, none except one.
Among hundreds of children who have vanished, Will Cleary is the one child who returned. Only three years old when it happened, he and his twin sister, Emmy, both disappeared at the same time. Will came back, but Emmy didn’t. Why is it that he was the one child who was able to make it back home? And why did he come back without Emmy?
Nearly a decade later, Will finds a clue that leads him to a mysterious world called Echoland. But his search for Emmy isn’t going to be as easy as he hopes. The king of Echoland has been murdered and his royal name has been defamed; the prince is in hiding, on the run from the false king; and the dreaded Fate Sealers are roaming the land, eager to murder anyone who crosses their path. Will soon learns that everything happening in Echoland directly relates to him, his sister, and their disappearances long ago. He cannot go home unless he helps the prince; but will he be able to? Is Will’s sister still alive and can he find her if she is? If he succeeds, will he even be able to find his way home again?
The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid was a fun book to read. The originality, the mystery, and the action all make this book a book that keeps the reader engaged and curious about what will happen next. This book has received 6 different awards, and it's understandable why. Overall, I give this book 3 out of 4 stars.
I think some of the characters could have been introduced better. Some characters were given short introductions then disappear from the story for long periods of time. This made it difficult to remember who they were and how they fit into the story. I had to go back in the book to when they first appeared so I could review who they were.
There were also times where the overall storyline was difficult to follow. Echoland is a completely different world, but Echoes (the people native to the land) are exact copies of people on the Sound realm (our world). So was confusing to know if I was reading about the real Will Cleary or the Echo Will Cleary.
This is an excellent book for teenagers. The chapters are short and could be read in short spurts. Yet they are full of action, so they continually keep the reader's attention.
