This book review is on HEALTH TIPS, MYTHS, AND TRICKS – A Physician’s Advice by Morton E. Tavel, MD. Tavel is a Medical Doctor and Cardiologist. He is a third time author with books related to the health field. Dr. Tavel states, ‘In preparation for this book I encountered not only additional widespread myths and scams, but much additional information of positive value for public consumption’.
Dr. Tavel organized the book into three in depth categories. They are Tips which gives helpful health information. Myths which debunks claims of useful findings which can cure illness or supplement dietary health. Tricks are use of persons such as celebrities or athletes to endorse products for sell.
Throughout the book Tavel imparts a wealth of factual information to support his findings.
He gives useful and timely advice for many maladies and remedies to leading health topics. He answers questions you may have asked and now have facts. Research is done on many subjects and presented in a knowledgeable manner. Dr. Tavel touched on a myriad of topics, explaining some health issues and disclaiming misleading information. One is quick weight loss fads. He stresses diet and exercise as the key to losing and maintaining weight loss. He states, ‘ Any diet containing reduced fat or carbohydrates could achieve satisfactory results along with increasing water intake and eliminating all sugar’.
Dr. Tavel wrote this book to clarify misleading information about health and health issues. He gives many instances of erroneous facts and ways to correct them. He did research to back up his findings. He is very thorough in gathering and presenting information in this book. The book, although knowledgeable, is rather long and some topics could have been more concise. For example, the section on, ‘The polygraph (Lie Detector’) test: Itself the Biggest Lie’, Chapter 50 –page 203-213 could have been shorter in presenting the definition and usage. The same for Chapter 62-page 268-278 Standard Medical Care or Chiropractic Treatment. Dr. Tavel explains why issues of human health are divided into two parallel universes –science based medicine and alternative medicine. And he touches on other issues related to chiropractic health.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is given 3 stars because the book is very informative. It is not given a 2 because there is a wealth of knowledge in its text. The book answers many health questions you may have. The book is intensive with lots of in depth information which could be shorter therefore I rated this book a 3.
