I just finished reading this book. I don't view Hiram as a monster or a saint, but just a normal man with a lot of complex issues. He is very misogynist so it was hard for me to read this book without feeling disgusted. I felt more disgust from everyone's overall actions and thoughts then really Hiram McDowell. Thanks for the review!

I reviewed this book a while ago as well, and this is pretty much an accurate summary. I understand your dislike for Hiram, yet, despite the main character being insufferable, we still like the book. You can see the author's talent through this.

I agree with you when you say that Hiram is a very unlikable protagonist. I reviewed the book as well recently, and I felt the same. We both gave the same rating despite this fact, however, and I think that really speaks to the author's expertise.

It is always interesting to see how different people view the redemption arc. Most feel sorry for Hiram. Thanks for the review!

Your summary is very thorough and I liked it a lot. I have to agree with you about its complexity and the issues the author discusses since I reviewed this book a while ago. So thanks for the lovely review.

It's notable that, despite the two possible extreme viewpoints about this book's theme and the main character, a lot of our fellow reviewers still found it a worthwhile read. Thank you for your thorough review.

How can one person have three wives? Does he hate his life that much? And he's shown that he has no integrity, he's a user and liar. I'd love to read this book. Beautiful review.
