This is the story about love, hate, power, beliefs, and struggles of the book entitled “The Spirit of Want” created by William H. Coles. About a gorgeously smart woman, egocentric, and a complex person that made others life complicated.
Attorney Lucy MacMiel, a criminal lawyer indicted for vehicular manslaughter. Dr. Luke Osbourne, an ophthalmic surgeon, and husband of Lucy whom he thinks that she married him to act as an unpalatable witness for the prosecution. After Lucy being dismissed of charge, a chance to lead the defense accepted the case of an Evangelist Preacher Hower Bain assaulted of rape. After all, it's her chance to escape the married life of pretense. Teacher Elizabeth, Lucy's half-sister, a kind woman who falls in love with Luke when Lucy left him and be with Bain.
The author points out malpractices, politics in a company, affairs, and charlatan faith healer. In the hospital, Luke knows how to handle those so-called “politicians” since he is sincere consistently a straightforward person. Nevertheless, he lives pitiful due to his cheating wife. Leaving him and raising Jennifer their daughter alone is heartbreaking. Where can you find a man who is loyal, loving and supportive? Opposite to Hower as a bogus preacher without conscience that preaches the word of God yet being intimate to a married woman moreover raped an underage girl.
The best among them is Elizabeth, a lovable and kindhearted character that Luke effortlessly falls for her. The love she gives for Jennifer is immeasurable as if she is the one who gave birth to his child. An ideal wife for him and a mother to his daughter, perfect for a simple loving family. On a contrary, Lucy is a real she-devil considering her decisions went wrong for being in love. As a lawyer, ordinarily having a divorce is easy when she falls in love with another man. As a wife, the initiative to tell her husband about his shortcomings is a must. Meeting Hower for the first time they were bickering with each other though resented and admired his work at the same time. Disbarred for having sex with the client, her apathy towards the firm is the highest. Wanting the thrill and the passion that Hower can give, she is on the verge of achieving anything whatever it takes. The adage says that love is insane so she simply wasted her life.
Something in your possession there's no need to yearn. To love is natural and not a crime thus the lover's carelessness act matters. There's missing that I couldn't distinguish if it's character or style that doesn't suit my taste that I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The story awakens mixed emotions although occasional errors found. Recommended from young parents to adults.
