Toni the Superhero is the first in a series of books about Toni, a boy who is a Superhero in his spare time. It introduces Toni to the reader and describes what he likes to do when he is not out solving crime. He helps out around the house, plays with his friends, sings and draws pictures, all whilst wearing his cape and mask!

Toni may be a Superhero but he is also a character that every child can relate too. He enjoys doing the normal things that children like to do, such as drawing, playing and dancing. Parents will also like Toni because he likes to help out with the housework.

Toni the Superhero is aimed at very young children. Children who are 3 years old and younger would enjoy listening to the book being read to them. It is very short and has big, colourful illustrations on every page. It would also be a good book for children who are just starting to learn how to read. There are only a few simple words on each page making it a suitable for a 4-6 year old, depending on their reading level. The author repeats several simple words throughout the book, such as ‘likes’ and ‘to’, leaving only one unfamiliar word on each page. I think this is a good strategy to encourage new readers. They will easily learn the familiar words so will quickly be able to read most of the book independently.

Toni is a likeable character and the subject matter will appeal to very young children. The author will be able to use him in many other scenarios, giving lots of scope for further books.

The illustrations are bright and colourful and will capture a child’s attention. They do look a little bit amateurish in places, which may put some people off if they don’t look further than the front cover. However, the illustrations do help to bring the story to life as they accurately depict what is happening in the story. A child would enjoy spending time looking at the details found on each page.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I was always looking for suitable reading material for my children when they were just starting to read. Toni the Superhero fills a gap in the market for beginner readers. It is a fun, interesting, colourful book that will be enjoyed by young children and parents looking for a short bedtime story.
