In the book The Warramunga’s War by Greg Kater the WWII battle with Germany has extended into North Africa and on that front is Erwin Rommel, also known as the Desert Fox. How on earth is he winning so handily? Good intelligence is needed to stop the flow of information from the enemy in Cairo to Rommel, so James Munro (Jamie) and Jack O’Brien (Jacko), are recruited by MI6 to take on the assignment. Jacko is unique in that his father was British and his mother is a Warramunga aboriginal. Having been brought up in the culture, he learned the ways of the Warramunga which give him tracking abilities and other unique abilities to carry out their assignment. After the war, Jamie and Jacko are assigned to track down the bad guys leading them back to Australia and deep in the outback.
I liked The Warramunga's War because it has all the elements of a good historical fiction; it is set in a particular period of time in history, has an adventure, intrigue, romance, camaraderie among friends and colleagues and an overall good story. I liked that it was set during WWII which is and always has been a good backdrop, or setting for a story because there is so much adventure and story to tell in every part of life. I was impressed that the antagonists are true gentlemen and manly men, respecting the women they work with and yet when tracking down the enemy, relentless in their pursuit and making sure the bad guys get what they deserve.
I liked the camaraderie between our protagonists, a study in loyalty and respect and also a relationship that will continue to drive the story through additional novels.
What I also liked was the author's willingness to write in the language authentic to Australia and the tribals of the outback. Sometimes, I wasn't quite sure what was being said, but it was entertaining. What added to the entertainment of the story, to me, was learning more about the language and culture of the country of Australia.
I am looking forward to reading the next installment of this book.
As I try to think of something I did not like about the book I cannot think of anything in particular.
I gave it the rating of 4 out of 4 stars because of the great story and entertainment factor. In addition, I did not come across any editorial issues which were also the reason for giving the rating.
The Warramunga’s War would appeal to those readers who love a good adventure and romance, although the romance is subdued, which was refreshing, actually. It would probably not appeal to someone who would want to read romantic books with sexual descriptions or books with outright violence.
