This review is on the book Chrome Mountain by Ben Schneider. This is a self-published science fiction/fantasy book that was released May 29, 2018.
The story begins introducing two main characters and giving their back stories. Sonya recently fled a biker gang whose leader is her ex-boyfriend, and she has gone into hiding at her grandma’s house. Trey is a scientist who had invented an invisibility shield but then, out of fear of it being used inappropriately, destroyed it. The two characters meet by chance and join forces to flee from terrorists, called the Chrome Falcons, and police.
The duo is able to board a plane belonging to the terrorists, obtain weapons and valuables, and seek refuge temporarily in a hotel. They are contacted by the FBI who wants to join forces with them. The terrorists are a great threat as they have access to advanced technology and are widespread. Sonya and Trey must fight for their own lives as well as those they care about.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. It is action packed but also lengthy. I appreciated the backstories of the characters. An unexpected religious theme occurred which did not seem to fit with this genre but as a Christian myself I appreciated the story of Christian redemption and faith conversation. However, those with different beliefs may not have appreciated it in the same way. The conversation did happen quickly, which to some may not have been realistic but I embraced that due to it allowing the character to move forward with the faith and strength rather than slowly build to that point. The book was already long enough without taking a long time for this theme.
Another item was not fond of was the way the characters conversed with each other. It did not seem natural. The dialog, even when the characters spoke to themselves internally, was very detailed and not how most people would speak.
One thing that bothered me about this book was the cultural insensitivities such as stating “that Asian” and “jewfro”, and also frequently commenting about obese people. The negativity stood out in the otherwise action-packed book and seemed unnecessary. This book was recently published and in this day and age we live in a very sensitive world and including these negative aspects will rub some people the wrong way. There were also derogatory words used when referring to women.
Overall, this book is entertaining and I recommend it for adults. It would not fit well with children due to the violence, swearing, insensitivities, and derogatory words.
