In Apollo’s Raven, Linnea Tanner weaves Celtic tales of love, magic, adventure, betrayal, and intrigue into historical fiction set in Ancient Rome and Britannia. A powerful Druid has cast a curse that a Raven will rise and destroy King Amren. The curse was placed on King Amren’s daughter-Princess Catrin. She has to find a way to block the curse. She is torn between her forbidden love for Marcellus which is her father’s enemy and her loyalty to her family. She has to summon the magic of the ancient druids to change her dark prophecy.
I give this book [/b]4 out of 4 stars[/b]. This fantasy novel focuses on a challenging historical time from which few written records exist. This story is full of tales of tribulations, yet Rome’s influence is portrayed asa complicated situation. The fantasy elements of magic and mystery are found in the presence of druids and curses. Tanner’s research is evident in this well-written fantasy. There are many details included that helped explain the plot and setting very well.
The book explores pagan traditions. Character developments show the women of this time with strength and unity. The men are shown as physically superior, but also in need of a woman’s intervention. The sequence of events move logically, smoothly, and swiftly from chapter to chapter. There were a couple of sex scenes. The short chapters were a nice touch as it moves the story along without any interruptions. This book included many details in a short period of time.
This book kept me very intrigued and wanting more. I was very happy to find out this was the first book of a series and there would be more to this story. I loved the fact of Catrin’s connection to the Raven as I was definitely invested in this mystery. This helped me have a personal connection with her and hope everything worked out for her in her romance and family life. She is trying to figure out what she has done to deserve the things that are happening to her.
This book did not contain many errors and was well-formatted. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasies with magic and romance intertwined. I have deep belief that anyone who loves this time period and mythology would be invested in this book. The author is very talented and knows how to write words that are from the heart.
