William Coles’ novel The Spirit Of Want is a work of fiction that will evoke all kinds of emotion from its readers. I cried, smiled and was even filled with anger as I read through this work of fiction. I saw love, hate, betrayal among other feelings as I read the story of the life of Luke Osbourne and Lucy

The Spirit Of Want is a story that is majorly about desire and betrayal. Luke Osbourne is a widowed ophthalmic surgeon who gets a second chance at marriage life when he meets Lucy, a successful lawyer and a daughter of his colleague AJ and his wife Agnes. The basis of their marriage is not genuine and their marriage is filled with conflicts and disagreements from the beginning. Lucy spends her time focusing on her work with Luke also focusing on his work which leads to a lot of distance from their Daughter (Jenifer) and between them.

The first part of the story focuses on building the plot of the story which shows the beginning of the marriage and family of Lucy and Luke, the beginning of Luke’s involvement in the family of Lucy and the conflict that will arise between Luke and Lucy’s father AJ which will later influence the path Luke will choose to take in his career and the involvement of Hower Bain a preacher and one of Lucy’s clients, who later plays a very big role in the decisions and outcome of Lucy’s life. The second part focusses on the relationship between Lucy and Hower and brings into the picture the issue on Christianity, the values and immorality seen in Christianity and also shows the consequences of Lucy’s actions in the past on her family and daughter in particular. It also shows the blooming relation between Luke and Elizabeth(lucy's sister) who is portrayed as a caring and motherly person. The last part of the novel focuses on the relationship between Lucy and the family she had deserted in the past, her relationship with her daughter and the troubles Jenifer had to grow through because of the actions of her mother and it also involves the outcome of Lucy and Luke’s life in the end.

Is it possible to find forgiveness from your loved ones in spite of the terrible things one has done in her lifetime? Are there consequences for the actions and decisions a person makes in his or her life? Can one get back the life she had deserted in the past because of her desires? In order to acquire any of this things one has to accept that what she did was wrong and for the protagonist in this story, that was a difficult fact to accept, despite of the effects and consequences of her actions on others and herself. Finding out hurting but true facts can help one accept the wrongs in her life and decide to correct them. For Lucy, her daughter, the truth about Hower Bain, the hardships she faces and eventually her deteriorating health help her realize her mistakes and try to correct the mistakes she made in the past.

This tantalizing fictional tale will make you question the basis of values in the Christian faith and whether the preachers genuinely care for their congregation or are only there for the money. It will also have you question the integrity and professionalism of professionals and the impact of some decisions on the life of others. It will also help you gain knowledge on politics, law, and medicine among other areas in life. This thus encourages people to not only see the problems that exist in our communities but to also understand that our desires can greatly influence our actions. Seeing how all these factors affected Luke and Lucy’s life and how it affected her family makes you question your actions and its outcome on others. William has the ability to make you blend in with the characters, understand their feeling and make you feel part of the story and he also ensures that a reader fully understands by giving comprehensive details.

The Spirit Of Want is professionally edited with no grammatical errors. The plot of the story is well defined with good timely explanations thus helping one understand the time between each of the events and to understand the geographical location of the scenarios

This story will appeal to many readers especially lovers of the romance and drama genre. It will also appeal to lovers of novels involving existing issues in our lives including corruption, law among others. If you enjoy suspense in stories and a mixture of emotions then you will surely love this novel. It is also has a few mild sexual scenes and does not have strong language thus acceptable to a wide range of readers in terms of age. For all the above reasons I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It would be a great book to add to your library.
