I thought prison break was the best international fugitive story ever until I read: Gringo: My Life on the Edge as an International Fugitive by Dan "Tito" Davis.
Dan was born in Dakota, his parents weren’t extremely poor, but they didn’t have a lot; as Dan puts it ”there wasn’t much money to spare.” Dan wanted to become a jockey since they had a career day in school, with their teacher’s son, who was a horse racing trainer. As soon as he was old enough he became a jockey, and earned more money that summer than his father made in a year. This only propelled Dan to want financial independence. While in college, he was introduced to a drug called “white crosses” that helped ace all his tests; all his friends were using it, so he did too. White-crosses intrigued him and the other students so much, that Dan started supplying the drug in his college. He made a deal with a drug dealer called Babe and soon he had his own company, which supplied the legal drug. He became a millionaire by the age of 24.
Dan fell in love and gave the love of his life all she could dream of. His life however fell apart soon after that, so did his marriage. He got arrested for drug dealing but escaped. The author takes the reader along on Dan’s journey as an international fugitive. He leaves his second wife and step child behind and embarks on a journey to Guatemala, to run away from the feds. His journey is thrilling, scary and exciting. He got me turning pages faster that I have this entire month.
The book has a good description of how cartels work, and how one can have their life ruined in just the blink of an eye. The author also brings out diversity, there are Latin Americans, African Americans, Asians and so many more diverse cultures brought out in this book. I got to say never has a thriller book gotten me as hooked as this one. However the book left me with so many questions at the end. I’m hoping to get my hands on the sequel soon.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I was truly thrilled. It’s an amazing story that is very well told. The author is really talented. This book has received many accolades and a lot of recognition, and I think it deserves every single one of them and even more. I recommend it to anyone who’s looking to be thrilled and to read a story that will leave them with all the feels. This is the best non-fiction story I’ve read this year. It’s so well told I even thought it was not a true story. I feel like every single reader who loves thrillers and non-fiction stories, will truly fall in love with this story; and hey, if you loved prison break I have a feeling you’ll also love: Gringo: My Life on the Edge as an International Fugitive by Dan "Tito" Davis.
