Sigfried’s smelly socks is a delightful children’s book, filled with colourful illustrations that younger children will enjoy. As the title suggests, smelly socks are involved. The author, Len Foley, uses smelly socks to gently and casually introduce the topic of personal hygiene. So, along with all the fun, a life skill is also taught. A great children’s book such as this one, can tell a story through the artwork and offer the author the opportunity to expand young minds through interesting poetic language, fun alliteration, and advanced vocabulary.
It is familiar, clear, and authentic. Most kids have interacted with all the objects mentioned in this book. Like a good children’s book should, it offers a sense of joy. It makes us laugh and gives us a character we want to care about. The central theme that holds this book together is cleaning.
Children will get a lot of use out of this book, with or without adult supervision. It will help them learn the names of everyday objects, learn their letters by rewriting sentences from the book; and they could also recreate images from the book as an art project.
The language Len Foley uses is light hearted and humorous, making this an excellent choice for a bedtime story. Like a piece of art, this book is greater than the sum of its parts. It is honest, has a sense of wonder, and shows respect for the young child. It emphasizes the dignity of childhood. This book will teach, entertain and help spark a child’s imagination.
The book length is well suited for a child’s concentration span, it conveys an entire story using very few words and they will easily reach for it, time and time again. Selecting good books is one of the best ways to nurture young children. Reading this book aloud to a child shows affection, caring and a desire to connect and have fun. It is a teacher’s chance to be completely present and attuned to the child.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 for its excellent illustrations which are bold, imaginative and in good taste .The text and illustrations are integrated to raise the quality of the book. It has short well constructed sentences, easily readable by a child. It also approaches the topic of personal hygiene in a unique and interesting way. Sigfried is consistent, believable and whole, I can’t wait to read other books about him.
