If you’re working on your first book like I am, then The Life and Lessons of a Young Author by Sunayna Prasad is the book for you! In 8 not-too-big chapters and just around 30 pages, the author conveys everything an author must know when going through the writing, editing and publishing process of his/her first book. She explains her journey with the struggles she faced, the ups and downs she had and the stubbornness she had to overcome during her writing and self-publishing process of 2 books. She starts with an introduction telling the readers on how to use this book. She hopes that by sharing her experience and giving tips and advice, novice authors may benefit from the book.

She started writing at the young age of 6 years. She first experimented with picture books, short stories and fan fiction which I found very smart and innovative. She got the idea for her first book when she was in eleventh grade and throughout that year, she learned about the publishing process. She self-published her book and mentions what led her to choose self-publishing over traditional publishing. I think many need to consider the pros and cons of both before deciding on either.

She emphasizes a lot on how we should get unbiased feedback on our work. I agree. It’s easy to give our work-in-progress (WIP) to our family and friends and hear their compliments. What we truly need is constructive criticism which strangers can provide us with.

She published two books which are off the market now. She says that she will publish them again when the time is right. She elucidates on the journey she had with getting both books on the shelf and though, they may not have been huge successes, it helped me understand various aspects of the process that were new to me.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The flow of the book could've been better. Other than that, it was a great book.I love books like this which help you and also keep the points short so it’s not a big read. It’s perfect for writers new to the world of editing and publishing. I related to the editing process blues as I am stuck in that phase now. The author gave a lot of good pointers and advice that I was writing down while reading. I will definitely read this book many times again before I get my book published.
