The Life and Lessons of a Young Author by Sunayna Prasad is a short book that gives advice to people who have hopes of making it in the world of writing and publishing. In The Life and Lessons of a Young Author, Sunayna shares her experience as a young author. She talks about how she started creative writing at the age of 6. She goes further to discuss her development through the years. The author also talks about the hurdles she had to overcome as a writer while giving us steps she took to overcome them.
Picking up this book, I didn't really expect any in-depth guidance on how to become a successful writer. I expected more of no-brainer tips on doing well as a writer. The book spans about 25 pages, which makes it difficult for anyone to go in-depth on just about any topic. However, the author managed to add a few short stories that helped drive-home some of the tips she gave.
There was a lot I liked about this book. The author uses her real-life experiences in the book, showing us her errors and how she felt after failing with her first book. This made her more relatable. She also talks about the importance of taking constructive criticism in the writing process. She states that opinions from people you don't know are more valuable than opinions from family or people close to you, and I completely agree. Family and people you know may fear to give you an honest opinion to avoid a potential confrontation, and this can often lead to a failure to address key issues that hinder one's progress as a writer. I liked where the author mentioned the importance of review sites in constructive criticism. She also does well to advise writers against spending too much money on reviews. It would have been appreciated if she elaborated on how much would be considered as too much for reviews.
There wasn't much I didn't like about The Life and Lessons of a Young Author. There were a few grammatical errors, all of which popped up towards the ending of the book. For example; In the last chapter, the author says, "you should not spend a lot money on reviews". Most of the errors appear as missing words, like in the example where the word 'of' is missing. These errors slowed down my reading a bit, as I had to take the time to figure out the proper words to complete sentences.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Life and Lessons of a Young Author. I would recommend it to writers who are just beginning to learn their trade. I would also recommend it to experienced authors, as there is a possibility that they can learn something new. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The grammatical errors in the book take out 1 star.
