If Life Stinks, Get Your Head Outta Your But’s by Mark L. Wdowiak is described as a no-nonsense guide to happiness and success. The author shares his lifetime of lessons and mistakes with you in the hopes that you can bypass destructive habits and program yourself to achieve all of your dreams and potential.
I really enjoyed this book, and I can’t say I disagree with any advice the author gave. Mark imparts his wisdom and advice in a caring, almost fatherly way. His tone waxes from lighthearted and humorous, to bluntly factual. He’s sensitive in his delivery but doesn’t coddle. If you have a destructive habit or behavior, he lets you know; furthermore, he’ll tell you exactly what to do to overcome it. His writing isn’t exactly eloquent, but he gets his point across effectively in an easy to read, entertaining manner.
I would like to say this book is automatically beneficial to everyone, but for me personally, it took a while to get to something I could actually apply to my life. Unfortunately, the first 40% of the book spoke about things I’ve already gone through and learned myself, so it wasn’t much help to read it after the fact. However, I completely agree with the lessons he attempts to impart. I actually wish I could have read this book when I was in my teens and early twenties because those were the years when I was going through what the author describes.
After that point, the author moves on to more generalized advice for people who have some mistakes under their belt and are trying to move beyond them to the other side. I began to enjoy the book much more because I could apply his advice to myself and see ways I could improve and get out of some of the ruts I’ve dug. I think the most helpful takeaway I learned was the analogy he gave about helping yourself first before you help others. I’ll definitely be thinking about that one from now on.
Overall, the book looks professionally edited. However, I did notice a few places the editor missed. There are some punctuation issues and spelling errors. There are also some missing words and other minor mistakes. Fortunately, these errors are few and far between. Proofreading could vastly improve the book’s appearance, but overall, legibility is good.
I enjoyed reading this book, and I eventually did get something out of it. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I think the people who would get the most benefit from the lessons inside are teens and very young adults who haven’t had a chance to make the same mistakes. Still, people who are older could probably learn something new if they’re patient enough to stick with it.
