The Barnyard Buddies STOP for Peace is a children’s book written by Julie Penshorn. In this book, the author presents an acronym STOP for the four steps a person can take to not get angry and resolve a problem in a frustrating situation. To enable better understanding by children, the author has described the situation and solution in a story of animals in a barnyard.

The story is a simple one perfect for children. There are six animals, namely Clover the goat, King the horse, Grey the donkey, Portland the pig, Ol’ Dot the mare and Mrs.McCloud the owl. All the animals were at peace and sunbathing until it started raining. Everyone but King complained as he was able to get shelter under the barn roof and the others couldn’t. The animals were angry at first but under the advice of Mrs.McCloud, they followed the four steps of STOP to resolve the conflict.

The illustrations couldn’t have been better and add a lot of amusement to the story. The facial expressions of the animals were so beautifully depicted. The illustrations of the pig were the best and for some reason, the donkey had a pair of spectacles on! The role of the owl was a bit cliched. The owl is always portrayed as the smart or wise one. On the other hand, I can’t stop thinking about the donkey’s look with the spectacles.

STOP stands for ‘Stop and Breathe’, ’Tell how you feel’, ’Open your minds’, and ‘Plan a deal’. To be honest, adults also need to learn these steps. These four actions can give insight to a deeper problem if there is one.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Anger is never the best way to deal with a conflict of interests or any conflict in general. The earlier children learn that, the better. For all the adults who haven’t learned that yet, please do. Let us all try our best to live in peace and harmony!

The author used her history as a horse trainer and riding teacher to use animals in her stories. Children learn best and faster through examples and through something they can relate to. The story of these animals can easily associate with any simple conflict or misunderstanding that a group of friends may have.

As an added bonus, the book gives Parent and Educator Guide, additional questions and activities and a mentor program for the book at the end of it. There’s even music notes for a song ‘STOP for Peace’ penned by the author herself! What more could we ask for in a children’s book!
