This book entitled Sigfried’s Smelly Socks is definitely a book intended for kids and for kids at heart. The author blended her story with humour and dabble her rhymes with words in a little child’s perspective. She even mingled pictures to add color and finesse that would surely entertain a little child and an adult when reading this. I included the adult here because generally we are the first to read this stuff when we are purchasing books for our children.
Back to our review. Firstly, the author introduced her story about familiar smells found in each pages of this book. She make it to a point to entice the readers’ imagination at the start of reading. It’s like drawing out your curiosity by pointing to your sense of smell. She presented it in a point of view of a kid. For the author, she knew that kids are more imaginative than adults so that they tend to be immersed in this story.
In addition to this, her formula for words and pictures plus the the way with which she makes the protagonist of the story talk to ( or should I say play with ) the reader is very effective. The author just captured the moment how a kid tends to be playful or observant with his or her things or belongings which in this case is all about smelly socks. For the part of me, even as an adult, I was carried back in time where I am also hiding my used socks and well sniffing them.
On the other hand, as I read the first pages of this book, I thought it gets boring or is way out of the topic as I go deeper in the story. But as I continue reading, the humour and excitement begins to build up. Many thanks to its colorful pictures that it trigger one’s imaginative mind. As I have mentioned before, the author makes you a part of the story.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is simple and has a highly imaginative approach in conveying the story. It is in the point of view of a child talking to the reader or the listener as well. Last but not the least, perhaps the child or that little naughty but curious kid is pretty much talking to himself at all. To would be readers, kids and adult, I highly recommend this.
