Short, sweet and to the point this picture book for young children is well, super! Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base is about a young boy who is a superhero. While most superheros are out fighting crime Toni the superhero is doing all the things normal kids do. Toni likes to: swim, dance, rescue animals, dust, help his mom with the dishes and sleep. He does all these things with a bright smile on his face and wearing his superhero outfit of course!

I love the simple message this book gives. What I took out of it was that attitude is everything. Even while Toni was doing things that children might normally complain about doing, like sweeping for example, he does it with the same can-do-attitude as he does other more superhero things.

I also think this book is a source of empowerment for young children. They may know of superheroes but do they also understand that they are indeed superheros themselves? They are special and if Toni who likes to sing and draw like they do is a superhero than so are they! What an important message in today’s world when so many are trying to put other’s down. This book is meant to lift people up and remind children and adults that they are special and important.

The illustrations in this book are bright with bold, and interesting colors that pop right off the page. Toni’s superhero outfit is typical to a generic hero’s but the illustrations of him doing everyday tasks while wearing the cape sprinkles an added measure of enjoyment.

In a story for young children, as this one is, each word is cleverly chosen by the author. There are not many words in this story but the words that are there speak volumes and are all that is necessary to get the point across. I could see this book easily be added to bookshelves as a quick read before bed or a delightful afternoon page-turner. What is even more fun about this story is that older children can practice their reading skills as they recognize the simple repetitive words.

This book left me smiling long after I turned the last page. It is a feel-good story with powerful messages. Parents all around the world can recognize their superhero child in Toni’s enthusiastic smiles on each and every page. I would love to read more from this author! I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
