And Then I Met Margaret

If you think self-help books are a dime a dozen, you ought to read And Then I Met Margaret by Rob White. This is not your typical author sharing his secrets about success. Rob White provides the reader with stories about life lessons he has learned along the way from childhood to adulthood. He offers answers to popular myths and the realities they miss.
The writer grabs our attention by introducing himself as a small boy in an obscure town destined to follow in his father’s steps. Each chapter in the book is a new adventure the reader takes with that boy who grows up to be a successful man.
White does more than share lessons learned because he relates how he used experiences to motivate him to the kind of life that he wanted to live. He not only shares myths, but he also tests them and uses the results successfully.
Rob White proves himself to be a skillful storyteller introducing us to various people that influenced him and then the ones he, in turn, helped along the way with the lessons he learned. The title of the book, And Then I Met Margaret, refers to a key chapter in the book.
What I like most about this book is the surprising way that the writer grabs our attention with things in life that we relate to from childhood to grade school to high school – even to college and beyond. The reader sees multiple parallels to his own life in the adventures of the author. The plot moves nicely through life experiences without the kind of drama often experienced along the way. Lessons are learned, then applied toward motivational thinking that shows the reader a way to achieve entrepreneurship. The book is from the perspective of small-town America with natural dialogue and believable characters.
If there is anything I do not like about this book, it is the Introduction which leads the reader to think that this is a travelogue of an adventurer who is trying to make money by selling a book. Having read the book, however, I find that the author is much better than his Introduction suggests. His quest for ‘gurus’ was rewarded with conclusions reflecting Christian values as he tells moving stories about real life. His technique of “The myth I believed - the reality I discovered” is instructive.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I will recommend this book to my friends. I do recommend the book to adults who have done and learned some things. I think that someone who wants to know how to become successful personally and financially will find much of value.
