Toni the Superhero by the author R.D. Base is a short yet sweet book which is suitably targeted towards young children between ages 0-4. This book has been perfectly tailored to the likes of toddlers and early readers who need a starting point in learning to read.
Despite his amazing superhero status, the main character Toni is portrayed as a very down to earth character that children can easily relate to. When he isn’t too busy saving the world, he is doing everyday activities that any child can be capable of! This could lead the reader into questioning, what is it that actually makes him a superhero? Although Toni is pictured flying to show the young audience that he does have special super powers, the author has cleverly included him doing everyday activities that are accessible to all children such as playing with friends. This can allow them to feel that they can be a superhero too!
There is not a standard structure to this book, as there is not really a typical beginning, middle and end. This is because the point of it is not to have a plot, but instead to broaden the vocabulary of early readers and help them to learn. In most cases for children’s books, there is usually a lesson to learn or a message that the author attempts to put across – in this case the message to the reader is that being a superhero like Toni can be achievable through simple activities such as helping out with chores, being active, looking after animals and eating healthily! Each page begins with the sentence ‘Toni likes to […]’, which is a good repetitive opening line that is to be considered very useful as young children learn language through repetition. The book shows him to be a very well behaved child, as at the end of the book the author states that 'Toni is Terrific!', ultimately finishing the book on a positive exclamative.
The book has beautiful presentation, is professionally edited and looks to be a good read for young children who are just beginning to read either at school or at home. It offers vibrant and colourful illustrations to engage the audience, and these could also be used to assist especially early readers if they do not know a particular word that is on the page. I feel that Toni the Superhero is ideal for parents looking to buy for beginners who are learning to read, or even just for a nice story before bedtime!
Because of all the positives stated about this book, without a doubt it deserves 4 out of 4 stars, and it is very clear to see why it has been voted as the book of the month! The fun doesn’t finish at the end of this book either...this is the first of a series that is coming soon!
