Review of Ellie Ment and the Material Matter

[Following is a volunteer review of "Ellie Ment and the Material Matter" by Bertie Stephens.]
I did not love the book Ellie Ment and the Material Matter. The author used a very strange narrator’s voice to offer a lot of unnecessary commentary that came across very awkwardly and made the book more difficult to read and understand. The subject matter itself was incredibly juvenile - the story line itself was complicated and hard to follow, but the subject matter felt directed to small children. The characters were all described as very unique but came across as just normal kids. The supporting adult characters were flat and had nothing of interest about them and no character development throughout the book. The main character was also flat with no character background provided or development throughout the story. The author did nothing to make me interested in the setting, the characters, or the story line and the main problem itself. The basic premise of the book could have been interesting but the author did not develop any of the interesting pieces enough. The book was difficult to stay interested in and read all the way through. My main problem was that the storyline itself was complicated and hard to follow while the subject matter was very basic and felt like it was for very small children. However, small children would not be able to follow the needless complexity of the storyline that the author introduced by doing things like using the weird narrator voice adding commentary throughout the telling of the story. The editing of the book was flawless with no noted typos or grammatical errors, but that unfortunately is the best thing I can say about the book. I do not recommend this book and certainly will
