Toni the Superhero by: R. D. Base and illustrated by: Debbie Hefke; is a great children’s book. The cover offers an engaging picture that quickly pulls the reader in, children can relate to other children. Visually a child would want to read something they feel will keep them engaged. Seeing a child just like them in a full costume, complete with eye patch and cape looks fun. This would get the child wondering what this story may be about, because it looks fun and exciting. The cover is the first insight into what a book is about. It helps to tell a reader if they what to read a book or not, in some cases.

Base uses relatable pictures, illustrated by Hefke, to portray her words while keeping the child’s attention. The vivid colors on each page allows for the reader to be brought into the story with Toni. The illustrations show the reader a complete picture of all the events taking place through the entire book. This in turn brings the readers closer to Toni and helps the reader better understand what activities Toni is involved in. This also allows for the reader to visually go along with the different adventures with Toni and his mother and friends are doing.

While some children would like to be superheroes, other children would like to just grow up. Toni gives a relatable view on being a child and how much fun it can be. Just because he has super powers, does not mean he has to use them at all times. He spends some of his time doing chores, which some children may not find to be so fun. While saving time to do the fun stuff that kids like to do. Not everyone can be a superhero; but each person can be a child and enjoy different adventures, while even having fun along the way.

Being a mother, this book captures the innocence of a child being a child. It also is a great read for a child to read on their own and enjoy. Base makes this inviting for a child. Whether a child wants to read to self, read to a friend, or a teacher would like to read to her classroom, all options would be great for a book like this. Each page offers an easy to read sentence for even a beginner reader to read.

Superhero or not, sometimes it is just fun to be with family and friends, Toni balances that well. Family and friends clearly seem to make Toni happy, no matter what the activity may be performing. I sure a child would want to read the other adventures Toni has in store, in R. D. Base series of Toni the Superhero books. I would recommend this to all children to read, this would even be a great gift for a child just learning to read. I give this book 4 out of 4. This rating was given because overall the book was well written and had great illustrations.
