And Then I Met Margaret by Rob White is the thought-provoking memoir of a successful entrepreneur. In the introduction he lists all of the famous gurus he visited searching for an antidote for his painful emptiness. Self-help books are a dime a dozen, but this book becomes remarkably insightful. Each chapter is prefaced by a myth he once believed. Then at the conclusion of the chapter he reveals the reality he discovered from that story's character or life-changing event.
In "Queen of Hearts" he relates the life lesson he learned from his lonely, maiden aunt, is that real kindness is not an act of self-interest, but a sacrifice to show real love. As in that first chapter, he tells equally compelling tales in all chapters. Each story reveals transformational moments that destroy the myths we have about ourselves, uncover the untruths, and reveal the insights of real truths.
In "Gurus In Our Midsts" he realizes that bigger is not better, that despite the wealth and success he had achieved, that he had been spiritually bankrupt. The message in "Pebbles and Fools Gold" is not the myth that magic happens randomly to him, but that magic happens as a result of his actions.
All of the thoughtful stories Rob White tells teach one primary lesson: that our lives are filled with unassuming teachers who can help destroy our false myths and show our hearts the reality. Margaret, the namesake of the book, is a simple schoolgirl whose attitude and unimpressed reaction to White showed him that not the toys of attention and admiration, but that gratitude is above all else. The charming stories of folks who changed his life are endearing tales, some are humorous, some are poignant.
After reading the introduction to the book, this reader was not motivated to finish reading it. The pretentious bragging the author did about his rags to riches life was not appealing. Add to that negative was his attempt to impress with the name-dropping of all the famous life coaches he had met with. However, if one presses on into the chapters, one experiences an about-face and learns to appreciate his life lessons.
Professional editing was evident of this polished book. Except for a mistake in Chapter 13 (where a character named Susan suddenly had the name Karen), no errors were evident.
And Then I Met Margaret will appeal to readers of all ages, including intelligent, well-read teens. This book should be rated 4 out of 4 stars by this reader, who thoroughly enjoyed the lessons Rob White learned in his fascinating life.
