Alex Fine’s story continues in this sequel after the close shave of coming face to face with the people who were hunting him down. He finds himself at a place where he needs to keep himself from using his unique ability and keep a ‘low’ profile. His quest takes him to Las Vegas, where he starts a new life and meets a new lady who seems to understand him very well. Although she seems to fill a void in his soul temporarily, their lives weren’t always full of bliss but they manage to bring themselves out of a self-destructive path by the prospect of having a child. His hunters unexpectedly caught up with him and they made an attempt to abduct the new Alex outside the hospital, drastically changing the trajectory of the future they hoped for as a couple. Sequences after this event eventually put Alex in a position he loathed being in; working for the government.
Just as in the first book, Alex’s actions would be accompanied by a string of destruction to the people he cared about most, but this time he almost gets the entire world involved.
Superhighway 2 is the second book of its series by Alex Fayman. His storytelling ability shines through in this book as much as the first, keeping his unique plot simple for the average person to understand. The characters in his story are not too defined because there is a high turnover of the same. We only get to have a feel for a person in the book when the story focuses for a while on characters important to the main character. For example Ms Jenkins, his former caretaker, who had to go through a lot of agonies over his coming in and out of her life but loved him unconditionally. I felt the author balanced this out according to the role of each person as they did their part in their respective scenes. We also see hints of vanity in the main character as he mentions labels like Nike, Ferrari, Perrier, etc.
The author also has a knack for using metaphors and puns in his storytelling, but not over the top, which I liked. For instance, “With its mirrors cropped off the Ferrari looked like Holyfield after his abbreviated Tyson bout”… “We inhaled a dozen years of companionship through our noses.” The latter phrase came after the main character’s reference to the heavy use of narcotics with his wife.
I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. It is an entertaining page-turner and recommendable to those into Sci-fi fiction. There were a number of errors though, with only one being glaring enough to distract a reader from the story; “…helping me toward the far wall of the egg-shaped (room as I) hung on his arm as he lead me out of hell.” The words in brackets are missing in the Kindle book. I also think ‘lead’ should be ‘led’ or 'leads'-(Chapter 34). For a book one has to pay for, some editing needs to be done.
The book contains some promiscuity within, so those who would be put off by such should avoid the book.
