Toni the superhero is a unique children book targeted on the young reader of age between 0 to 4 years. The story aims to teach young children how to read. The book is written by R.D Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke. The story is well written with the use of simple words, short sentences, and beautiful colorful pictures.

The story is based on a young child called Toni who is a superhero. The book doesn’t mainly focus on the superpowers of Toni, but the activities the child does. Despite Toni being a superhero, he is seen performing various household chores and activities like dusting the house, washing dishes, swimming, and eating. This is not as common as other superheroes stories are mainly centered on a superhero been a person who is always looking for people in need to help. Toni enjoys his childhood he even plays with his friends and does other activities just like any other human being.

The author choice of using a superhero as a main character for the book is recommendable as kids are attracted to characters with superpowers. In the book, Toni is the superhero as he is indicated in the pictures flying and wearing eye masks, cape and superhero costumes. Despite his superhero powers, the main story focuses on daily human activities performed by Toni. The author tries to display that in spite of the various superhuman abilities of Toni he is the same with other kids. Toni is even seen playing and swimming with other kids.

The author uses short sentences with simple words, like ‘ Toni like to dust,’ ‘Toni like to eat’ and ‘Toni likes to run’ which is much recommended for kids learning how to read. Sentences are also accompanied with illustrations of colorful pictures. For example the author sentence, ‘Toni like to sweep’ there is a drawing of Toni holding a broom sweeping. The format of the book is ideal for children starting to learn how to read. I would recommend teachers and parents to read aloud the book to young kids, and they would enjoy it and quickly learn how to read. Also, it would help facilitate discussions with the kids on different drawings in the book. As the author illustrates the book is only for young kids as it would be boring for older kids, who have possessed high reading skills.

I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It’s a unique book with an exciting story about a superhero which kids can enjoy reading and in turn learn how to read. The author has used simple words and short sentences which are perfects for kids learning how to read. Debbie J. Hefkeuses colorful pictures which is recommendable as they would help attract kids attention and help them to decipher words. The book also helps show kids that regardless of one possessing special abilities there is a need for one to complete various chores. I found no grammatical errors or spelling in the book. I would recommend this book to kids learning how to read age between 0 to 4 years. Parents can buy it for their children without any worries as Toni can be a good role model for their kids.
