Review of Ellie Ment and the Material Matter
I very much enjoyed Ellie Ment and the Material Matter. The author did a great job creating a believable world with fantasy elements. The characters had enough depth to be entertaining but not overwhelming. Michael and Ellie’s relationship was just complicated enough to be believable for their ages. I got a big chuckle out of Ellie’s parents names.
I learned a bit about chemical elements as well as their interaction, which was a nice bonus. Makes me wish i had paid more attention in Chemistry class when i was younger.
I enjoyed “The Games”! It was interesting to see how each contestant learned from the previous round. I cringed as some were injured, which is great, in that the author invoked a response. Exactly as they hoped, I’m sure.
I believe that some of the adults overreacted to Ellie - less out of fear of her being undisciplined and more out of concern that she was stronger than they were. I can understand wanting her to learn, but to turn her away entirely was ridiculous.
There was a moral to the story in the end, but it wasn’t overly preachy.
I hope that there will be a follow up to the story as I’m interested to see what interesting things Ellie and Michael get up to next. Following them on their adventure will prove interesting.
I believe the book was well written, although i didn’t realize when i was starting it that it was a Y/A novel. I think young people will definitely identify with the slightly misunderstood Ellie and Michael. Each looking at the other as the ideal, while feeling just out of the loop themselves. Each craving to fit in without realizing that it’s their uniqueness that the world needs most. Great Read! Time Well spent.
