Then I Met Margaret by Rob White is an inspiring story about how our experiences and the people around us shape us through the course of our lives and how transformational it could be.

The story started when the author was born from poor parents, and had his life pre-determined from an early age that he will follow his father’s footsteps. But growing up, he knew he has a different path to take. The poverty he experienced motivated him to change his circumstances when he grew up. He did all he could to elevate his status by being a school teacher, and later on becoming an entrepreneur. But even though he was able to acquire all the material wealth, he felt that something is lacking, contrary of what he expected that he would feel after having all these acquisitions in his life.

Because of this, he felt that he needs to tap on the spiritual side of himself and began his journey of self-discovery. But his transformation didn’t happen overnight. The mistakes and the different experiences he encountered through his journey makes it an interesting read.

When I chose to review the book, I don’t know what to expect. Being a fan for self-help books, initially I find the page count too short in my opinion, based on the past books that I’ve read on the genre. The book is professionally edited, but I’m not much sold on the book cover, it could do some improvements.

I thought that this might be just another motivational book, but my opinion changed when I’m in the 3rd page. By then I was hooked and read it in one sitting. I’m glad that I gave this book a chance that it deserves. I love that he made a great job presenting every character in the book as authentic as it can be, portraying clearly their emotions & their struggles, that you can’t help but feel for the characters too.

This book is beautifully written, insightful as it can be. In my opinion I should have read this book earlier. I want to applaud the author for sharing his experiences, which I bet is too personal and emotional to write about. I could feel the sincerity in his writing. He tried to write his experiences in an inspiring way, without being too self-deprecating and excessively sentimental.

For those individuals who needs an uplifting read after a long day, or just needs any motivating book to read, I recommend this book. I’m awarding this book 4 out of 4 stars, for being such a satisfying read.
