I have read a couple of children’s superhero books. All of them portray the hero as a person who is out of the ordinary. Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base is no different, but the unique spin the author adds to the story makes a great read.

The book introduces us to Toni, a young boy with superpowers. Toni wears superhero clothes which are vibrant and colourful as depicted in almost all the pages in the book. Though Toni has superpowers, he also enjoys doing things ordinary people do. Toni enjoys eating, sleeping, playing and also doing any other house chores like other ordinary kids. Look up in the sky and, ‘whoosh!’ you are bound to see Supergirl, Spiderman or even Toni, fly past.

The book is meant for children who are still learning to read. I recommend the book to parents who want to teach their children to read. The book is also good as a bedtime story; therefore I highly recommend it to parents who want to bond with their children. Pre-school teachers will also find the book useful. The pictures are charming, vibrant and big –those who can’t read will enjoy going over the pages. There is a short sentence per page or double page which makes the book age-appropriate for the intended reader. The moral of the story is to encourage children to help do household chores. The story also teaches children that play and socialisation are important and fun.

Toni the Superhero is a cute little book whose main focus is to teach kids to read. I liked the way the author portrayed that superheroes can also do what ordinary kids can do. Children relate well to superheroes, hence this is a great way to capture the interest of children. The language used is very simple –the intended age group will stay focused. Emerging readers are able to read on their own because of the simple language used in the story. I think it would have been nice if the author had illustrated Toni with his father, mother and siblings so as to show the importance of a well-knit family. I also have a problem with the use of the word, ‘rescue’ in the book. I don’t think emerging readers will be able to read the word on their own. Save for the aforementioned flaws, the book is superbly written.

Toni the Superhero features how Toni spends his day, from morning till he goes to bed. The illustrations are huge and eye-catching. Each sentence is related to the corresponding illustration –a great way of capturing the attention of the reader. The book is superbly edited; I will be a supervillain not to award this superhero book a perfect score. I, therefore, rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

Interesting premise for a "superhero" book. I think it's a nice "antidote" to the superhero mania we see in the movies (Avengers come to mind).

I agree this is a superhero book with a difference. The unique spin gives it an advantage over other superhero books. A great book for children of all ages.
