Review for ReAssigned of Shayla C. Freeman
Rating 4/5
This is the second chapter in a series dedicated to Dr Savannah. The story takes place in Singapore. Dr Savannah is travelling there for both a medical emergency and her second job as a spy. Dr Savannah has been recruited by the CIA, and her mission is to spy on Lian Ong.
Two of her friends, who are in Singapore on holiday, also join her. However, while she is with her friends, an earthquake strikes. Faced with this disaster, Dr Savannah must carry out both her jobs simultaneously. She must therefore set up a triage to try to help the injured and continue her mission as a spy.
I have given this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The rating is so high because the book is action-packed and certainly full of suspense. The fact that the author holds a degree in medicine and has worked in the emergency room certainly adds value; this allows her to incorporate all the knowledge she has gained through her personal experience into the book. The reason I deducted a star is that, in some instances, the role of spy overshadows that of the Doctor too much. The Doctor has too many gadgets and too much spy equipment at her disposal, which seem at odds with her background and the rest of the story. I would have appreciated a slightly more organic integration of the two roles the Doctor plays.
Furthermore, as noted in the previous volume, although the main characters are well-developed, the secondary characters appear somewhat stereotypical and two-dimensional. I would therefore have preferred them to be better developed and given the importance they deserve.
When reading the book, I came across a few errors, but they are truly minor. This shows that the book underwent professional editing. In fact, the errors found do not detract from the reading experience in the slightest.
