Review of “Illustrated Short Fiction of William H Coles “by William H Coles by Mr. Justin
(The following is a review by a volunteer)
The “Illustrated Short Fiction of William H Coles” by William H Coles paints a vivid picture of various characters’ emotional struggles: Love, anger, hate fear, worry, joy, sorrow, and so forth. It’s a collection of thirty-three short stories, two graphic novels and a novella─ each one presents a unique character in a particular social setting trying so hard to overcome a life challenge.
One typical example of the said unique character is the story about Catherine entitled, “Gift”, in which a seventeen –year old girl becomes pregnant. But since her parents were not pleased with her early pregnancy they had decided to send her to a Catholic Convent where she was nursed until she gave birth to a baby girl, who she named Patricia.
The said story, and the two novels and a novella are interesting stories to read in which the author, Coles, developed real characters with real human emotions. Coles is a gifted story- teller who through his effective artistic skills and a writing flair can hold you captive in his plane of literary imagination until you finish reading all stories in the book. No wonder why he packed so many stories in one book!
Coles managed to develop strong characters like Catherine, John Hampton and many others. The main plots and sub-plots are also work of a skillful writer. Of course, his descriptive language is very good, and both description of scenes and characters are excellent. Since a story is told in an imagery a writer creates in the readers’ mind, then Coles really managed to tell all the stories. However, there are a few typographical errors, but not fatal enough to distract one from reading the book.
What I do not personally like about Coles’ collection of thirty –three short stories, two graphical novels and one novella is that they are packed in one book .The 500-page volume of the book takes away from the readers’ interest. The cover is unattractive. Indeed, if you take into account the poor cover design no young readers would even want to read it. However, the stories are informative, educative and entertaining as they inspire readers who are facing similar life challenges. As the saying goes, “Do not judge the book by its cover, but read it.” Therefore, I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars because of the foregoing shortcomings. I also recommend the book for both young and adult readers.
