Blessings Abound: Awaken to the Gifts at Hand, by Katherine Scherer and Eileen Bodoh, is a short book that is filled with inspirational wisdom. Through their words, quotes by famous people, short meditations, and prayers, the authors propel the reader to reflect on the blessings that are found in everyday life. The authors divided the book into three sections of blessings: ones received, ones taken for granted, and ones that are disguised. The authors point out that life is a miracle from the moment of birth through adulthood, and a person who recognizes blessings will live a happier life.

I really like the way the authors use Henry David Thoreau’s comparison of happiness to a butterfly. People often look for things or others to make them happy, but real happiness comes from within. A person who is happy spreads that happiness to others, which results in continued growth through service.

I also liked the way the authors described beauty. Beauty can be found everywhere. Nature and healing display beauty. Looking for good in others displays beauty. Looking for good when bad things happen displays beauty. The section on beauty really made me look back on my own life at some of the beautiful things I missed, while giving me determination not to miss them when given more opportunities.

There are blessings all around us. Blessings Abound: Awaken to the Gifts at Hand is a book that helps us to see blessings we may have missed or taken for granted. There was absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. It is a quick read; in fact, I read parts of it more than once, and I’m positive I will read it again and again. I am happy to rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, and I recommend it to anyone who likes inspirational books.
