The book illustrates the journey of a man from childhood to where he is now, and the encounters that shaped and defined him as a person. Growing up in a traditional, culture-steeped small town background, the author describes the various rituals that his rural life imparted, and sometimes demanded, of him. Along his way he encounters individuals from all walks of life, each affecting him in their unique ways, imparting to him lessons that are summarised by two lines - one, the myth that the author believed prior to the encounter, and two, his changed perspective towards that myth.
He begins by illustrating the story of a selfless aunt and how he took to himself to do the same for someone else. Little did he know that this man would then repay him by landing him the next step up the career ladder. Further stories include him inspiring his students taking after an uncle who had a knack for a magic trick that reveals a person's motivations, an early stage in his life where he was taught the lesson of integrity (and how he got a thief to repent by himself reimbursing the victim), and, among others, once he had made it in life, a situation where he mistook a woman to have been appropriating his food, when in fact, he was the one who was mistakenly devouring the kind lady's, while the lady did not oppose, and even welcomed. In total, this book contains 21 snippets of the author's life and the lessons that were taught to him by each encounter.
This book deserves to be kept in the self-love shelves, and taken out at different stages, during times of difficulty, gratitude, and challenges. It gives a humbling insight into what it means to be human, to be compassionate, to do the right things, and to ultimately pursue your dreams in a dignified and honourable manner. It is a book that would impart different lessons, different meanings, each time you read it, because it is the experiences of another human, and we interpret things differently based on our situation and circumstances, which are ever evolving.
This biography format works wonders for the book - it allows the reader to emphatise with the author, learning from his mistakes, and bringing about a reflection of oneself. I found it highly enjoyable to read as it humbles us, and reminds us at the end of the day, despite who we are and what we do, there will always be one thing in common - that we are all human, and that we are all the same, in one way or another.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found no errors in the book and I believe it is a highly enlightening experience to indulge in this book on a sunny evening with a cup of tea in hand.
